The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), founded by Alladi Ramakrishnan in 1962, is an autonomous national institution for fundamental research in the areas of Theoretical Physics, Mathematics, Theoretical Computer Science and Computational Biology. The Institute is governed by a Board and an Academic Council.

Research at IMSc is supported by the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India and by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The Institute has a vibrant academic program, including an active PhD program to which a select group of students are admitted every year. IMSc also supports a large number of scientists at the post-doctoral level and hosts a visiting scientist programme. The Institute organizes several national and international scientific meetings annually.  IMSc is also involved in a range of outreach activities for schools, colleges and the general public. The Institute Annual Reports summarize ongoing research and other institute activities.

IMSc has a comprehensive scientific library and diverse computing facilities including high performance computing and a high speed network. A centrally air-conditioned office and lecture-hall complex houses academic members of IMSc. A 200 seat auditorium, the Ramanujan auditorium, is used for large scientific meetings while smaller lecture halls, classrooms, media rooms accomodate more modest gatherings. The campus is entirely Wi-Fi enabled.

Chennai Mathematical Institute

Chennai Mathematical Institute is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences. Founded in 1989 as part of the SPIC Science Foundation, it has been an autonomous institute since 1996.

The research groups in Mathematics and Computer Science at CMI are among the best known in the country. The Institute has nurtured an impressive collection of PhD students.

In 1998, CMI took the initiative to bridge the gap between teaching and research in India by starting BSc and MSc programmes in Mathematics and allied subjects. Students who have graduated from CMI have gone on to join leading institutions throughout the world.

CMI occupies a unique position in Indian academia, attracting substantial funding from both corporate and government sources.

In October, 2005, CMI moved to its new campus at Siruseri, on the southern outskirts of Chennai. In December, 2006, CMI was recognized by the Government of India as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.

CMI’s vision is to build on its early success and develop into a well-rounded academic institution, in the tradition of the best universities around the world.

CMI’s goal is to evolve into an institution on the lines of the great universities in Europe and USA. These institutions, founded on a tradition of learning and scholarship over the past few centuries, attract students by the presence of outstanding academic persons on their faculties.

Excellence in research and teaching go together. Faculty who are research oriented can present the material they teach from fresh perspectives. This gets students involved in the process of scientific discovery and opens the eyes of bright young minds to the joy of doing science.

The teaching programme at CMI began in 1998, when the Institute arrived at an arrangement with the Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University (MPBOU), Bhopal, to offer accreditation for a BSc Honours course in Mathematics and Computer Science at CMI. In 2001, the BSc programme at CMI was augmented to include separate MSc programmes in Mathematics and Computer Science. In 2003, CMI expanded its BSc programme to include a course in Physics.
